Title: Whistle for NCO's.

Place: Duchy of Brunswick

Date: 1776 - 1783.

Equipment Unteroffizier:
The so-called Kurtzgewehr was carried by all Unteroffizere. It was really only of use on the paradeground and as a status symbol. In the Brunswick Corps the Unteroffiziere of the Grenadier Batl., of the Light Batl. von Barner and the Dragoon Regt. did not the Kurtzgewehr. Unteroffizier carried a stick. Much is written about it but most of the information is incorrect. Without question the stick was used to remind the worst recruit to improve his performance. I am sure that beatings if ever happened with the stick were not very common. The drill manual specifies that the use of the stick was allowed but no harm had to come over the soldier. Any soldier was a very expensive person for the army.
To relate orders in battle the whistle came in use. Mostly made of lead and painted blue the whistle was used even in later wars.
